How to Wear a Button Down Shirt

There are few clothing choices as classic as a button down shirt. They’re one of — if not the mostversatile pieces you can have in your wardrobe. They quite literally go with everything, and they certainly won’t be going out of style any time soon.

I’ve been loyal to the white button down look for years — whether I’m dressing for work meetings, a night out with friends, or for a weekend filled with coffee dates and errands. They’re comfortable and easy to throw on regardless of the season or occasion.

Another perk to button down shirts is that they’re available in a variety of fits, styles, colors, and prints. I tend to reach for the timeless white options most often, but I also love to incorporate a blue and white striped button down from time to time.

Regardless of your personal style preferences, figuring out how to wear a button down shirt can be more intimidating than you might think. With so many outfit options, it can be more overwhelming than freeing — especially if fashion isn’t your forte.

Luckily, I’m sharing a handful of button up shirt outfit ideas below, all which should help you nail down a few go-to looks to test out. These outfits are easy to replicate and take multiple styles into account. Happy styling!

There are obviously plenty of ways you can wear a button down shirt, but here are a few things to consider when styling this wardrobe staple….

Consider fit.

The type of button down shirt you choose should depend on the overall feel you want your outfit to have. Looser, more relaxed shirts will offer a laid-back vibe while tighter and more fitted options will look polished and professional.

Tuck your shirt.

If you’re going for a more elevated button down shirt look, considering tucking it into your bottoms. Keep in mind that even a French tuck will make things look more upscale.

Go with an oversized shirt.

On the flip side of things, styling your outfit with an oversized button down shirt can provide you with a major “it girl” look (think Sofia Richie vibes.) These fits make the perfect complement to a pair of wide leg jeans and loafers.

Don’t forget accessories.

Because button down shirts typically offer a more understated look, consider playing your look up with accessories. Adding earrings, a necklace, a belt, or a cute handbag can really take your outfit up a notch.

I don’t think there’s a better day to day outfit than an oversized button down and denim shorts. It’s a tried-and-true combo that looks elevated while offering comfort. You could really pair any shoes with this look, but slip-on loafers will leave you with a feminine and chic end result.

Need something even more put together? Swap the denim shorts for a tailored option, which makes this look appropriate for work lunches or special occasions. Adding a belt can also take things up a level.

Don’t be afraid to venture outside of the white button down realm — a denim shirt is just as classic! I love the idea of styling denim on denim, but you could also go with a lighter blue button down if you aren’t feeling as bold.

Button down shirts don’t have to feel old lady-ish. There are plenty of styles out there that have a more modern fit, like this cropped option. I’d wear this to happy hour with friends or for a date night. It strikes the perfect balance between flirty and sophisticated.

Button Down Shirt and Jeans Outfit

There’s no better combo than a crisp button down shirt and a pair of straight leg jeans. If you work in a more casual setting, this would make for a preppy and cute office outfit. I love that you could wear this from day to night, regardless of the season or weather conditions. During cooler months, just swap the heels for loafers or booties.

Pants and shorts aren’t your only bottom options when it comes to what to style with a button down shirt. For a different take, opt for a skirt instead. A silk midi skirt can offer a pretty look while maintaining the same comfort factor as your top. Oh, and remember that you can always wear a tank underneath a button down top if you need an extra layer.

During my last trip to Paris, I couldn’t help but notice that wide leg jeans were all the rage amongst French women. We’ve definitely caught on to the trend over here in the U.S. and I’m personally a big fan of the look. Style them with a basic white button down for a clean and streamlined outfit that works for several outings.

For a preppy look, style your button down with your favorite pair of jeans and some chunky loafers. This outfit is comfortable, easy to throw on, and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. You could also add a cardigan around your shoulders to add some more dimension.

Blue Button Down Shirt Outfit

Next to white button down shirts, blue varieties are arguably the most popular. They give off a Nancy Meyers/coastal grandmother feel that makes them perfect for summer weather. Style one with white shorts and matching white sandals or heels, then finish the look with gold jewelry and a pair of sunnies.

White sneakers make the perfect shoe choice when styling a button down shirt. The combo has a cool feel to it and is cozy enough for all day wear. I’d reach for this outfit during a busy travel day or for an easy yet cute weekend look. Oh, and if anything, this proves that even a colored button down can be ultra-chic!
